Course
Outline:
This
honor course is for students who want to sharpen their Chinese language skills.
The offers more advanced training on listening to native-speed conversations,
speaking confidently and fluently, reading and writing with correct grammar and
a strong sense of the language. More real-life related
contents and culture topics will be covered in this course.
Course
Objectives:
Upon
completion, successful students will be able to do the following in Mandarin
Chinese:
- Speak
and write sentences with more advanced words and grammar
- Compare
and different
action words and practice
using accurate
verbs
- Use
common conjunction words to create compound sentences
- Use
common measure words accurately
- Discuss
common topics more fluently
- Write
descriptive paragraphs
and short essays
- Have
enough listening, reading and writing skills to pass standardized HSK level 3
test
Topics to be covered:
- The
geographic regions and major cities of China
- The
Countries and regions which Chinese are mostly spoken
- Travel
experiences, in the airport, Changing money
- Going
to the library, taking bus in Beijing
- Visiting
a doctor and compare eastern and western medicine
- Chinese
Holidays and festivals
- Chinese
New Year food and traditions
- Going
to restaurant and
talk about Chinese food
- Comparing
Chinese culture and western culture
Class behavior
expectations
- Be on time
- Bring proper materials
- Complete homework
- Have a positive attitude
- Put cell phones and other electronics away
during class
- Use target language as much as you can
Grading
Policy:
There
will be a quiz at the end of each dialogue. Tests will be given at
the end of each unit (one lesson on the text book). Students who are
absent during a quiz or test need to be ready to make up the quiz or test on
the day they return to school.
Quarter
grades will be calculated with the following:
20%---homework
assignments, class work, participation, attendance
50%---oral
quizzes writing quizzes
30%---unit
tests
Semester
grades will be calculated with the following:
Quarter
one grade: 40%
Quarter
two grade: 40%
Semester
final exam: 20%
Attendance
and Homework:
Attendance
will be taken every day at the beginning of class. Excused absences
require make-up work to be done within 2 days. Students are responsible for
catching up their missed classwork and homework on their own time. Both reading
and writing homework assignments are always due at the beginning of class. For
